There are eighteen schools in the Decatur City Schools system with a combined enrollment of approximately 8700 students. Decatur City Schools is among an elite group of U.S. school systems which have been recognized by School Match as an outstanding system; receiving this honor every year since 1994. Other noteworthy facts and achievements include:

  • Decatur City Schools is the only school system in the state of Alabama north of Birmingham that offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program for grades 11 and 12.
  • Decatur City Schools is the only school system in the state of Alabama that offers the IB Primary Years Program at the elementary level and is working towards approval of the IB program in its middle schools.
  • Students’ ACT-college entrance scores consistently exceed state and national averages.
  • Over 900 high school students are enrolled in one or more AP, Honors, and advanced courses.
  • The system ranks in the top ten school systems in the state for the number of national Board Certified teachers.
  • Decatur City Schools has been recognized with the Attorney General’s Safe Schools Award more often than any other Alabama school system.
  • In 2005, two of the sixteen Rhodes Scholar finalists from four states were from Decatur City Schools.
